I agree that that woman's idea that sex does not create intimacy is a faulty idea likely stemming in part from either protestantism, wider societal culture or both. But personally, I think the bigger reason is what you mentioned briefly: a lot of men are simply really, really bad in bed. This is true, both from my own experience as well as anecdotally. And, no, it has nothing at all to do with the man's notch count, as in a guy does not become a better lover by having sex with more women. The issue lies between his ears, and in his views on women, intimacy, sex and so forth. Having sex with a man who's bad in bed because the experience FOR HIM is all about him does not create intimacy. If that's most or even (God forbid) all of your sexual experiences you could be forgiven for subscribing to that woman's view.

Sex may not lead to genuine intimacy that enables wisdom The wisdom needed to resolve difficulties in a relationship. It can actually inhibit this. But you are right that it creates connection and a deeper, I guess, spiritual intimacy.

I love the point about self knowledge. I am free from shame because I went to confession, received grace and insights provided by a priest. My head was a bit of a mess and now I am free.

I wish I could provide context but I that would too much of a disclosure.
