With my ~150 IQ and Catholicism, and after trying them out, I have far too much inherent contempt for “AI” systems to see them as anything more than sophisticated but very imperfect search engines, assistant editors, and analyzers / compilers — they’re clearly not “intelligences” at all — but I can fully understand why they can be a danger to normies and liberals.
It’s certainly not the first time we’ve watched the masses gleefully jump off a cliff.
Forgive the crude imagery. Believing that AI is intellectual is like believing the porn star you're addicted to is really your girlfriend. It creates a subverted illusion that taps into human need for connection. The West in general has been so programmed for individualism it has been so easy to capture, isolate, drug, & manipulate through all devices and forms of technology. Stop being lazy! Read a book and write your dang summary. Use what little critical thinking you have left before that too is lobotomized just like intrinsic motivation.
Nah, I think most of AI panic is overblown by people reading way too much cyberpunk novels. Sure, satanic servitors are going to try and corrupt it for their purposes, but they do so with everything. Plus AI is giving the average person the computational power, that has been until now reserved for the most powerful organizations. It's just a tool, and one with the potential to help people spend less time in front of screens, not more. Oh, sure, it's going to destroy plenty of lives. But not more than World of Warcraft did back in the day. The only thing I'm worried about is governments using AI and Big Data to grow the surveillance state, but even then it's still better for us to have access to the tech than not to. I'm a cautious optimist on this one.
